Lenny Faces, One Click to Copy
The Lenny face — ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) — is one of the internet's most enduring text faces. Click any face below and it lands on your clipboard, ready to paste into Discord, Twitch chat, Reddit, WhatsApp, a game lobby or anywhere else text goes.
Unlike an emoji, a Lenny face is built from ordinary Unicode characters, which is exactly why it survives platforms that block or strip emoji. It works in game chats, terminal windows, IRC, and old forum software that has never heard of 😀.
How the Lenny Face Is Built
The classic face is assembled from five parts, and knowing them lets you build your own variations:
| Part | Character | Name |
|---|---|---|
| Outer brackets | ( ) | Standard parentheses |
| Eyes | ° | Degree sign |
| Eyebrows | ͡ | Combining double inverted breve |
| Mouth | ʖ | Latin small letter reversed glottal stop |
| Mouth accent | ͜ | Combining double breve below |
The combining marks are what make it work. They attach to the preceding character rather than occupying their own space, which lets the eyebrows sit above the eyes and the smirk curve below the mouth — all within a single line of text.
Where the Lenny Face Came From
The face was first posted on the Finnish image board Ylilauta around 2012, in a thread where it appeared alongside a caption in Finnish. It spread rapidly through Reddit and 4chan, and the name "Lenny" attached itself along the way from an unrelated Finnish meme character.
Its meaning is deliberately slippery. Depending on context it signals innuendo, mischief, knowing approval, or simply that the sender is being playful. That ambiguity is a large part of why it has lasted more than a decade while more specific memes came and went.
Kaomoji: The Broader Family
Lenny belongs to the tradition of kaomoji — Japanese text faces read horizontally rather than tilted sideways. Western emoticons like :-) require you to tilt your head; kaomoji like (◕‿◕) are already upright, which makes them more expressive and instantly readable.
Kaomoji emerged on Japanese bulletin boards in the 1980s and have vastly greater range than the Western set, drawing on Japanese, Korean and mathematical characters for eyes, mouths, arms and props. Our emoticons page has a fuller collection, and the symbols library covers the individual characters you would use to build your own.
Where Lenny Faces Work Best
- Discord and Twitch chat — the natural habitat, where text faces read as native rather than novel.
- Reddit comments — a well-placed Lenny still reliably earns upvotes in the right subreddit.
- Game lobbies — most games strip emoji but pass Unicode text through.
- Usernames and clan tags — subject to each platform's character rules.
- Anywhere emoji are blocked — corporate chat, terminals, older forums and SMS gateways.
